Michael Phelps made it safely into the 100m butterfly final at the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships on Friday, a day after missing out on a berth in the 400m individual medley.

Phelps clocked 51.48sec, just missing his goal of improving the Pan Pacs record of 51.47 set by compatriot Ian Crocker in 2006.

But the 14-time Olympic gold medalist said he was satisfied with the time and pleased to see team-mate Tyler McGill (51.69) also under 52 seconds. (more…)

Ryan Lochte won the 400-meter individual medley and getting the year’s fastest time at the Pan Pacific championships on Thursday night at Irvine, California.

The American led all the way and finished in 4 minutes, 7.59 seconds, beating his own meet record of 4:08.77 which he set in the morning heats.

Later on, Lochte came back to anchor the Americans in a whopping victory on the 800 free relay, giving the US its five gold medals, giving them a leading total of 12 through the first two days of the meet. (more…)

The 2010 U.S. (ConocoPhillips) National Swimming Championship is on its penultimate day at the William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center in Irvine, California.

This event serves as trials for the selection of US National team members that will compete in the international events such as World Championship and others including the 2010 Mutual of Omaha Pan Pacific Championship to held in Irvine later this month. (more…)

Ryan Lochte finally beat his rival Michael Phelps for the first time in the 200-meter individual medley at U.S. national championship Friday night.

Michael Phelps, winner of 14 Olympic gold medals, has admitted that he is struggling to find his form on freestyle as he makes final adjustments in readiness for US trials in Irvine from Tuesday to Saturday next week.

Those trials, he adds, will be more of a mental than a physical challenge. Phelps says: “I don’t think I’ve ever felt this bad in my freestyle stroke. I just feel like I can’t swim it. I don’t know what it is. A lot of little technical things that hopefully we can fix between now and nationals. … I think just overall there’s a lot of conditioning things that I think I can change between now and London.” (more…)
